Amphitheater

This area was originally the main factory base of Hōjōsha. During the Monopoly Bureau’s factory period, most of the original buildings were demolished and transformed into the winery’s entrance square. On the east side of the plaza stood the Matsunoo Shrine, originating from Kyoto and dedicated to the Japanese god of sake. After the site was taken over by the Tobacco & Liquor Corporation Monopoly Bureau, technician specialist Yuan-lang Lin was invited to design the garden and fountain in 1958. The large banyan tree in the garden of the current National Historic Monument—the former Monopoly Bureau (now Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Co. Ltd.)—was transplanted from the Taipei Brewery. In the past, the west side of the site also housed a library, a welfare center, and other buildings.
